The Origin Story
Growlrr Foods was born in Chennai in 2024, when I noticed something that changed everything: my cats, KitKat and Taxi, would growl when eating their favorite foods. Not out of aggression—but pure, instinctive satisfaction. That sound—a primal communication between predator and prey—reminded me they weren't just pets. They were miniature apex predators trapped in a world of cereal-based kibble.
I'd spent 21 months across four wildlife ecosystems—3 months tracking tigers in Pench, 6 months with ibex in Spiti's high-altitude deserts, 6 months studying orangutans in Sumatra's rainforests, and 6 months with elephants in Coorg's Western Ghats—working as a research volunteer in wildlife conservation projects. I watched how wild predators fed: the diet diversity was staggering. Tigers didn't eat the same muscle cuts every day—they rotated through organ meats, bone marrow, and seasonal prey across weeks.
Yet at home, KitKat and Taxi were expected to thrive on a single "complete and balanced" formula, day after day, for years. The cognitive dissonance was unbearable. These weren't different species—they were the same predators, separated only by size. If wild felids required dietary rotation to stay healthy, why were we feeding domestic cats industrial monoculture?
Why "Growlrr"?
The name captures two truths: (1) Our pets are predators—tiny lions and tigers who deserve species-appropriate nutrition, and (2) When cats and dogs eat food they truly love, they growl. It's a special communication between them and their meal—a sound of deep satisfaction that tells you you've gotten it right.
That growl is our North Star. If pets aren't growling over our food, we're not done iterating.
The Founder: Prasanna Venkatesh
I didn't come to pet nutrition through traditional channels. My background is in cardiovascular implant design—I spent years as a Senior R&D Engineer at medical device startups in California and Boston, working on products that had to meet FDA design controls, biocompatibility testing, and statistical process validation.
I hold an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the U.S., with a thesis in biomaterials. My training taught me how to reverse-engineer biological systems, design for manufacturability, and navigate regulatory frameworks that don't tolerate shortcuts.
When I turned that skillset toward pet food, I was shocked. An industry worth $150 billion globally operates with less rigor than a Class II medical device. Formulations are copied from competitors. "Complete and balanced" claims rest on feeding trials with sample sizes of 8 dogs. Ingredient sourcing is opaque. Quality control is inconsistent.

Add it to the fresh chicken, goat, egg, curd and steamed veg you source yourself—it carries exactly what supermarket muscle meat lacks: heme iron, Vitamins A & B12, the calcium-to-phosphorus anchor, chelated trace minerals and marine DHA. Engineered to exceed NRC 2006.
CatCore™
The same precision block, tuned for obligate carnivores—taurine, pre-formed Vitamin A, standardized liver matrices and DHA, decoupled from calories so you can manage your cat's weight without ever starving its nutrient baseline. Two fresh proteins a day; the block does the chemistry.
One Protocol, 2–110 kg
Calibrated allometry scales a single system from 2 kg toy breeds to 110 kg giants by metabolic units, not linear weight. By decoupling energy (your grocery fuel) from micronutrients (our blocks), the protocol sidesteps the “obesity trap” that couples kibble's calories to its vitamins. The Technology Layer: The Recipe Engine
Our webapp turns your pet's species, weight, age and activity into an exact daily bowl in seconds—block units plus grams of each fresh ingredient, with live cost-versus-kibble. A server-side allometric engine does the work: no nutritionist bottleneck, no generic PDFs.
Subscriptions run through Razorpay with automated WhatsApp reminders. Delivery happens via Supabase-backed logistics. The entire stack is designed for 10 million pets—not 100.
Why This Matters Now
India's pet population is exploding: 31 million dogs, 5 million cats, growing at 11% annually. But feeding practices are regressing. Kibble—grain-heavy, over-processed, nutritionally compromised—now dominates 85% of the market.
The result is a public health crisis:
- Chronic kidney disease is the #1 cause of death in cats over 10 years
- 60% of cats and 56% of dogs are clinically obese
